Carlisle boss Keith Curle is delighted to have extended Macaulay Gillesphey’s loan from Newcastle.

Carlisle manager Keith Curle has thanked Newcastle United publicly for extending Macaulay Gillesphey’s loan deal and assured the club it is a ‘win win’ deal.

Promising defender Gillesphey has played regularly for Carlisle since signing a half-season loan deal in the summer, and Carlisle announced on their official website yesterday that they were delighted to extend the agreement until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old would likely have returned to play in Newcastle’s under-23 team and Carlisle were effective in making the point that he is better served continuing to play first team football in League Two.

Curle praised Newcastle for agreeing to let Gillesphey continue with them and insisted it is a deal which everybody benefits from.

He said: “He has the potential to be a very good player and we’re pleased to be able to play a part in bringing that out.”

“I have to say a big thank you to Newcastle United. The lines of communication between the clubs have been excellent and that has helped us to get this sorted very quickly.

“I think they know that Macaulay will gain more by being around a squad which is looking to improve and, ultimately, fight for promotion to the next level. It’s a win-win situation for all concerned.”

Carlisle are currently in third place in League Two, three points off top spot, and so Gillesphey is part of a side which are striving for a clear goal.

As Curle points out, being part of this squad will be a vital learning experience for him and help him if he is to progress and make the first team at Newcastle.
