Newcastle United genuinely had a cracking January transfer window.
The Magpies were successful in luring an additional four players to Tyneside throughout the winter window.
Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn all joined Newcastle last month, signing up for their relegation battle.
However, the St James’s Park outfit were unfortunately unsuccessful in one pursuit.
Diego Carlos never wound up moving to the Premier League club.
According to The Daily Mail, Spanish side Sevilla valued him at £40 million and Newcastle’s highest attempt was only reported to be £30 million.
Therefore, Carlos stayed in Sevilla and his manager – Julen Lopetgui – is ‘delighted’ about that development.
Asked specifically about Newcastle’s interest in the Brazilian central defender, the Spaniard said to Mundo Deportivo: “We are delighted that the market has closed, that they have returned and that we focus on league normality. The winter market always generates that uncertainty and it is already closed.”
Even without the South American, United should certainly stay up.
Almost every position has been strengthened quite a lot in January – particularly midfield, with the addition of £40 million Bruno who arrived today – and in theory, Eddie Howe’s side should be fine.
Burn, who joined from Brighton, should suffice for now instead of Carlos but if Newcastle do indeed win their Premier League relegation battle, a renewed effort for Carlos ought to be expected.
