Manager claims star midfielder seems focused again after Spurs transfer decision

Tottenham Hotspur have snapped up Lucas Bergvall and Djurgarden boss Thomas Lagerlof has admitted the situation has been tough.

Ange Postecoglou completely played down the notion of Tottenham landing another signing before the January transfer deadline.

Spurs had already snapped up Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner earlier in the window and Postecoglou seemingly wasn’t expecting any more movement.

Tottenham were quietly working away on an incredible hijack though as they moved in to snatch Lucas Bergvall.

The Djurgarden talent looked poised to sign for Barcelona but Tottenham swooped in and hijacked the deal, securing Bergvall in a deal which will see him join at the end of the season.

Bergvall is only 18 but has has earned the reputation of being a real wonderkid in Sweden.

The 6ft 1in central midfielder showed promise with Brommapojkarna before shining with Djurgarden, even earning a first Sweden cap in January.

Bergvall will join up with Spurs at the end of the season as Tottenham add yet another top young prospect to their ranks.

That works out well for Djurgarden, who start their new season in April and will be able to call upon Bergvall for the first half of their 2024 campaign.

Co-manager Thomas Lagerlof has now told Fotboll Skanalen that the transfer saga has been ‘a lot’ for Bergvall to cope with having snubbed Barcelona at the last minute in favour of Tottenham.

Lagerlof feels that there has been a lot going on in Bergvall’s head, but he now seems focused and fully set on helping Djurgarden moving forward.

Lagerlof is happy that Bergvall’s future is now clear and hopes that he continues to feel settled in Sweden before eventually heading to London later this year.

“It has been a lot for him,” said Lagerlof. “You can tell he’s back and focused on being here. You understand that there was a lot going on in his head before, but now that he came back and everything is clear, it feels like he has landed in it and is secure in his situation. Really hope he continues that way,” he added.

Bergvall will now follow in the footsteps of another former Brommapojkarna talent in playing for Spurs, as Dejan Kulusevski had a similar upbringing.

Kulusevski has become a key first-team player for Spurs and Bergvall could well do the same with fans no doubt hoping that he is worth the wait just like Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr.
