Daniel Finlayson will not be at Steven Gerrard’s Rangers next season, according to comments from Jim Goodwin on BT Sport.
Finlayson joined St Mirren on loan from Rangers in the summer of 2020 and was scheduled to return to the Ibrox club at the end of the season.
However, according to St Mirren manager Goodwin, the 20-year-old defender will make his loan deal permanent and will severe his ties with Rangers.
Goodwin told BT Sport: “Daniel is on loan from Rangers at the moment, but we have a contract in place and an agreement in place with Rangers that Daniel will join up with us full-time in the summer.
“He’s one for the future. We had that conversation with Daniel and his representatives. We explained the project we have and what we’re looking for from Daniel. It was never about him coming in and getting 15 or 20 first-team games.”
Sensible decision?
Finlayson is only 20, and given how competitive the Rangers squad is at the moment, it is hard to see the Northern Ireland Under-21 international get into Gerrard’s team next season.

St Mirren have done well in the Scottish Premiership this season, and it seems that their manager Goodwin likes him a lot.
The youngster made his debut for the St Mirren first team against Ross County, and next season he could get more chances.
Of course, leaving a massive club such as Rangers on a permanent basis is never easy for any player, but for his own career, it does make sense that Finlayson has decided to stay at St Mirren next season and beyond.
