Celtic looked into appointing Pascal Jansen to replace Ange Postecoglou but he now finds himself out of work after being axed by AZ Alkmaar.

Celtic suffered the blow they were probably expecting over the summer as Ange Postecoglou left the club.

The Australian was almost mocked when he became Celtic boss in 2021, moving from Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

If people were laughing then, they weren’t laughing by the time Postecoglou had finished at Parkhead, winning two league titles.

Postecoglou moved on to Tottenham and whilst Celtic moved for Brendan Rodgers as his successor, one of their targets now finds himself out of work…

Pascal Jansen loses AZ Alkmaar job after Celtic interest

Reports over the summer indicated that Celtic were interested in landing AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen.

Rodgers ended up landing the job but Jansen certainly seemed like an appealing candidate.

The London-born coach secured a fourth-place finish in the Eredivisie last season and guided AZ into the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League, losing out to eventual winners West Ham United.

Jansen looked to be a really promising coach but things have gone wrong for him this season.

Jansen dropped just four points in the first 10 games of the season, enjoying a superb start to the campaign.

Form since then has been tricky though with AZ losing four in seven, taking seven points from a possible 21.

A torrid Europa Conference League campaign didn’t help either as AZ lost four in six and crashed out of the group stage.

AZ have now pulled the trigger, announcing on Wednesday that they have sacked Jansen and his time in charge is over.

Jansen leaves after 94 wins in 162 games, boasting an impressive 58% win rate.

We will surely see Jansen in another job soon enough; much of his AZ reign was very impressive and he will have attracted interest from elsewhere.

Maybe Celtic will keep tabs on him moving forward, but they will currently feel that going back to Rodgers was the right decision.
