Wolverhampton Wanderers and Celtic are reportedly competing to bring Mexico international Alvarez to the Premier League or Scotland.
Celtic and Wolverhampton Wanderers are both interested in signing Mexican international Edson Alvarez this summer, according to Bolavip. And, in a major boost to their hopes, his Club America manager Miguel Herrera has admitted that a departure is increasingly likely.
It seems only a matter of time before Alvarez follows in the footsteps of Hirving Lozano, Andres Guardado, Erik Gutierrez and co by making the move to Europe, having established himself as one of the greatest talents in Mexican football in recent years.
Bolavip claims that Wolves are keen to sign Raul Jimenez’s international team-mate, who is equally comfortably in defence or midfield, while Celtic are still interested in a player they offered £5 million for in January (ESPN).
And the famously outspoken Herrera, who spent two years in charge of Mexico between 2013 and 2015, has now admitted that Alvarez is unlikely to still be a Club America player by the end of August.
“I see him far from staying, he is a player who is attracting the attention of many people in Europe,” he said.
“But as long as he does not leave, I still consider him inside the club. I reiterate, he is an attractive player because of his age and his form.”
According to Mediotempo, Alvarez has a very affordable £8 million release clause in his contract, a fee that would be a drop in the ocean for Wolves and their ambitions, billionaire owners.
Celtic would have to make Alvarez their second most expensive footballer of all time but, with the 21-year-old capable of starring in defence or midfield, they should have no qualms about increasing their initial bid by another £3 million.
