The Rangers midfielder’s unavailability appeared to anger the Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard.
Steve Clarke has accepted responsibility for Ryan Jack missing Rangers’ game against Livingston last month.
Jack has established himself as a key player for Rangers, receiving international recognition off the back of that.
But his handling by Scotland during the most recent international break was described as “careless” by the Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard complained that Jack was asked to partake in an 11-kilometre training session just two days after he played in Rangers’ Old Firm defeat to Celtic – despite being afflicted by an ongoing knee problem.
And asked about the Rangers boss’s comments at Scotland’s latest squad announcement, the national team manager Clarke replied via Sky Sports: “I understand Steven’s point of view, because you send a player to international football and he comes back injured so you’re obviously going to be upset.
“It was unfortunate that Ryan picked up the injury and he missed a Rangers game, thankfully he’s back now and he’s playing well, and he deserves his selection again.”
On whether he was annoyed by Gerrard’s public outburst, Clarke said: “It’s not so much an annoyance. It’s, for me, with me, my staff and the player, it was probably a lack of communication. So we have to work on that, we have to be better on that in the future and hopefully we will be.”
Asked to clarify that it was a lack of communication on Scotland’s side, Clarke responded: “Within our staff.
“We have to make sure we address all these issues and hopefully it won’t happen again.
“I haven’t spoken to Steven (since). Steven said what he had to say in the press. Obviously I’ll speak to Ryan when we meet up in camp.”
Jack is once again Rangers’ only Scotland senior squad representative, with Allan McGregor retired and Greg Stewart, Jamie Murphy, Greg Docherty and Andy Halliday all overlooked.
