Liverpool are in a great position to challenge for the Premier League title, but with five games to go, it’s out of their hands.

Indeed, if the Reds are to win the league for the second time in three years, they’ll need a hand from one of Manchester City’s upcoming opponents.

Luckily for Liverpool, there’s one team that would probably be more than willing to do the Reds a favour – Aston Villa.

Of course, every team goes into every game wanting to win, but at this point of the season, some sides are ‘on the beach’ as they have nothing to play for in the final weeks of the season.

City face a number of teams in the coming weeks who could be considered to be in that mould – Wolves, Newcastle and even West Ham could fit into that category at this point.

Villa will be hoping that their Premier League survival is secured by the final day, but even if they have nothing to truly play for, there are a couple of reasons why they might want to do Liverpool a favour.

Steven Gerrard is the manager of Villa, and while he’s not a Liverpool employee anymore, after leaving the club under Brendan Rodgers in 2015, he still has incredibly strong ties to Anfield, and he’d probably love nothing more than to help his former side win the league by taking points off of City.

Gerrard, of course, never actually won a league title for Liverpool during his playing career, but he could indirectly hand the Premier League to the Reds on the final day of the season if he can get a result against City.

Gerrard isn’t the only man at Villa with Liverpool links either. Philippe Coutinho is the Villans’ star man, and he’d surely love to give his former team a helping hand towards the title, and the same could be said for Danny Ings.

Football often throws up some of the most unbelievable stories, and if Gerrard and Coutinho can somehow combine to help Liverpool on their way to the title, it would be a perfectly romantic way to end an incredible season.
