Manchester United’s academy is overflowing with talent, which means not every youngster is going to get the playing time they need to develop.

For years, Manchester United held onto players in their youth ranks for too long. Many youngsters spent multiple seasons with the U21s instead of getting valuable first-team experience elsewhere.

This approach caused a backlog, preventing younger players from moving up. And even when loans were arranged, they often weren’t well thought out, leading to disappointing spells away from the club.

But things seem to be changing under new loan manager Jonny Evans. Several young players have already secured moves this summer, and there’s hope that these spells will be more productive than in the past.

With Ruben Amorim only bringing a couple of academy players into pre-season training, we can expect even more loans for those between 18 and 20 years old. Some of them were on the verge of a first-team appearance just last season.

Jack Moorhouse drawing loan interest after United return

Jack Moorhouse spent much of last season getting back up to speed for Manchester United following a lengthy injury spell that kept him out for over a year.

Once back, he quickly caught the eye in the U21s, earning some time around the first team under Ruben Amorim. But now, it looks like his next step will be away from Old Trafford, at least temporarily.

Moorhouse hasn’t been seen with the senior squad during pre-season training, which made a loan move seem likely from early on. Now there are a couple of clubs showing interest.

Nathan Salt reported on Twitter that Leyton Orient and Huddersfield Town are both keen to bring him in on loan. A move to Leyton Orient would reunite Moorhouse with former United academy player Demetri Mitchell.

Over at Huddersfield, there’s another United link: Lee Grant, who was signed by Jose Mourinho back in 2018, is now their manager and is reportedly interested in adding Moorhouse to his squad as well.

No final decision has been made yet, but it seems increasingly likely that Moorhouse will spend this season out on loan.

For years, Manchester United had fallen into the trap of keeping players in the youth ranks too long, as some youngsters spent multiple campaigns in the U21 side, instead of heading out and getting first-team experience.

This, in turn, meant players in an age group down were unable to move up, and therefore, the pipeline was clogged. In addition, when United were sending players out on loan, they were often placed badly and failed.

However, with Jonny Evans appointed as the new loan manager, many young players have already made their loan exits from United this summer, and there is hope they will be more successful.

With Ruben Amorim only taking a couple of youngsters on pre-season we expect a lot more loans for players aged 18 to 20 this summer and among them will be some players who just last season looked close to a first-team debut.

Moorhouse can be a late bloomer for Manchester United

Moorhouse has reportedly been on EFL radars since April. While he was named on the bench several times for the first team last season it never felt like his debut was imminent.

A well-chosen loan spell could really help his development after all that time missed through injury and he may need a bit more time than most to reach his potential. Not every player breaks through at 19 – just look at Cole Palmer who didn’t truly emerge until he was 21.

Moorhouse has plenty of ability but is behind others like Jack Fletcher in the pecking order so should see this opportunity as one to relish rather than regret.
