Manchester United’s academy has long been a steady source of new talent, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Alejandro Garnacho will likely regret his falling out with Ruben Amorim in the years to come.

Losing a young player who came up through the ranks after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020 will always be a letdown, especially one with his potential.

But at the same time, United will not dwell on it for long. There is already talk coming out of the academy about another promising winger stepping up and looking to make an impression.

Shea Lacey has long been a highly regarded prospect within Manchester United’s academy, having scored his first under-18 goal at just 15 years old.

Injuries have been the sole impediment to his progress, even sidelining him from United’s 2025 pre-season tour.

Lacey, now fit again, made a game-changing impact in Manchester United’s mini-derby against City on August 31.

Playing down the right wing, he sent in a cross that was not dealt with by City’s goalkeeper, allowing Amir Ibragimov to score the winner.

It was the 18-year-old winger’s debut for Manchester United’s under-21 team, entering the game as a substitute with 18 minutes remaining.

Ruben Amorim takes notice of Shea Lacey

Shea Lacey has already made an impression on Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, and it is easy to see why.

Lacey was given a start during United’s post-season tour and stood out even in limited minutes, showing flashes of what he can do.

The potential is clear. What he needs now is a consistent stretch without injuries so he can build momentum at the under-21 level.

With Alejandro Garnacho gone, there’s an opening for fresh creativity in the first team – and that could work in Lacey’s favour as one of the academy’s most promising players.
