Manchester United and Liverpool go head-to-head in an early season test of both side’s credentials, with two old rivals level on points after four games.

Much of the build up to this game for the home side has been dominated by whether David De Gea will be welcomed back into the Manchester United side by Louis van Gaal.

Prior to the closure of the transfer window, van Gaal left De Gea out of his starting line-up, with many believing that he was destined to join Real Madrid, but his transfer fell through and now he has signed a new contract with the club. The indications are that he will take the place of Sergio Romero, who has been selected in the Spaniard’s absence.

In terms of both side’s start to the season, they will have been disappointed with the defeats that followed their two wins and a draw prior to the international break, in particular Liverpool who were humiliated at home to West Ham United.

Already, with both teams five points off the pace of Manchester City at the top of the table, there is a feeling that a win for either side will be more of a blow in terms of the top four chase rather than the title race, but at this stage of the season there is a lot of time for things to change for both, and a win for either could be the springboard they need.

In terms of personnel, the visitors are going to be without their key man in Philippe Coutinho, who is suspended, while Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana are facing a struggle in their battle to be fit for this contest, and there is an outside chance that Daniel Sturridge could be part of the Liverpool squad after returning to first team training.
