Manchester United have reportedly joined Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko, with the attacker inching towards a move from the Bundesliga giants.
According to the Times, Erik Ten Hag’s side are the latest Premier League club to throw their hat into the ring for Moukoko, who is regarded by many as one of Europe’s most exciting attacking talents and a youngster who has already broken numerous records for both Dortmund and the German national team.
The 18-year-old is the youngest player ever to feature in the UEFA Champions League when Moukoko made his debut in the competition two years ago, with the teenager also the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history as well as the youngest player to ever represent Germany at a FIFA World Cup, something the attacker achieved this winter.
Despite being a regular for Dortmund, though, Moukoko is yet to sign a new contract with the German side even with the attacker’s current deal set to end at the end of this season. And as a result, some big clubs are now on high alert, with United now in the mix.
Although Liverpool are in the lead for Moukoko according to Sport Bild, the £26m-rated striker now being the source of attention for United is not what Jurgen Klopp’s side would have wanted, with the Manchester giants having the pulling power to sign the German international.
Indeed, Chelsea’s interest as well could be a major hindrance for Liverpool given Todd Boehly’s eagerness to sign Europe’s best and brightest teenage prospects. Yet the Merseyside club could still consider themselves favourites for Moukoko given the Klopp factor.
Manchester United is the last club Moukoko would want to sign for
United’s track record of late of signing young players hasn’t been great, to say the least. From Anthony Martial to Jadon Sancho to Donny van de Beek, the Red Devils has been joked by some rival fans as a graveyard for promising talents to lay their career to rest. And for Moukoko, such narratives must deter the striker from joining the club.
Whilst Ten Hag might be able to change this culture around, a player with as much potential as Moukoko shouldn’t be taking any chances with his future. And as a result, Liverpool could be argued as the best possible destination for the attacker aside from remaining at Dortmund.
