Manchester United have a series of big decisions to make over the next two transfer windows.

Manchester United face a crucial period over the next two transfer windows as they attempt to reshape a squad that remains inconsistent and structurally flawed. The midfield, in particular, has been a point of contention, with Bruno Fernandes’ deeper role dividing supporters, Manuel Ugarte struggling to convince Ruben Amorim, and Casemiro nearing the end of his contract.

With United assessing long-term solutions, a familiar Serie A name has re-emerged — and for significantly less money than previously expected.

Ederson’s price drops as Atalanta prepare for negotiations

Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been on Manchester United’s radar for two seasons, with Fabrizio Romano previously describing him as a “dream target” internally due to his quality and potential cost. United even explored his signing in 2024 before completing a deal for Ugarte.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Atalanta are now willing to accept €50m (£43.7m) — far below the €70m previously sought. His agent Andre Cury has gone even further, telling Football Espana that the fee could fall to €30m–€40m due to his contract winding down. If that valuation proves true, United would struggle to ignore the opportunity to strengthen a problem position with a proven, peak-age midfielder.

What Ederson would add to Manchester United’s midfield

Ederson, 26, has grown into one of Serie A’s most complete midfielders and was key to Atalanta’s Europa League triumph in 2023/24. He has already made more than 150 appearances for the Bergamo club, with strong defensive numbers, effective ball-carrying, and a growing goal threat — highlighted by his strike in Atalanta’s recent 3-0 win over Frankfurt.

His former Corinthians coach Tiago Nunes described him as a box-to-box player who breaks lines and attacks space rather than orchestrating possession. A recent scouting report also highlighted his “compact, bulldog-like frame” and ability to impose himself defensively and on the half-turn.

With United’s new data-led recruitment department under Kyle Macaulay assessing long-term options, Ederson represents a credible, attainable, and increasingly affordable solution to one of the squad’s biggest weaknesses.
