With the summer transfer window now closed, it’s worth taking a closer look at what was a busy few months for Manchester United.
After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European qualification, United made five additions to their squad in hopes of turning things around.

Despite those struggles, Ruben Amorim still managed to bring in some quality signings as he looked to rebuild his attack.
The summer also saw Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford (loan) all depart Old Trafford. They were replaced by Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
Defensive depth was addressed with the arrivals of Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon and Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United were linked with several players they didn’t end up signing. For example, Liam Delap chose to pursue a move elsewhere instead of joining Amorim’s squad.
Man Utd considered move for Danny Welbeck
United were hopeful of landing Delap from Ipswich Town, but when that move didn’t materialise, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox had to pivot quickly.
It’s thought that Delap’s long spell at Manchester City made him hesitant to make the switch to their rivals.
The Athletic reported that United then explored bringing in another forward, with Brighton’s Danny Welbeck emerging as a name discussed by the club’s hierarchy.
Erik ten Hag had pushed for Welbeck’s return the previous year, but his request was turned down amid structural changes at Ineos and ongoing doubts about his future at the club.
Welbeck, who came through United’s academy and played 142 times for the senior team, finished last season as Brighton’s joint-top scorer with 10 league goals. He spent 16 years with United before being sold by Louis van Gaal.
A contract offer until 2027 was reportedly considered if terms could be agreed with Brighton, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe stepped in to block a long-term deal for a player nearing his 35th birthday.
Later in the window, United were also linked to Dominic Calvert-Lewin before he signed with Leeds following his release from Everton.
Welbeck career stats
Welbeck came through the ranks at United, earning his debut back in 2008 and staying until his move to Arsenal six years later.
In that time, he scored 29 goals and provided 16 assists in 142 appearances before heading to the Emirates.
During his spell with the Gunners, Welbeck racked up 45 goal contributions. He then had a brief stint at Watford before making the switch to Brighton.
Now in the twilight of his career, Welbeck is still playing a part for Brighton. He’s featured in all three of their Premier League matches so far this season, although he hasn’t found the net yet.
