Manchester United picked up their first win of pre-season against West Ham United during their USA tour, but there are still clear gaps in the squad that haven’t been addressed.
Matheus Cunha has caught the eye in both of his outings so far, while Bryan Mbeumo is still waiting to make his debut for United after joining later than the Brazilian.
Cunha and Mbeumo bring much-needed attacking quality to a side that struggled for goals last season. But with financial constraints still in place, the rest of the transfer window will not be straightforward.
Even so, Fabrizio Romano reports that United remain ‘very convinced’ they’ll land the signing Ruben Amorim wants most.
Fabrizio Romano shares Man United transfer update

United started the window strong by signing Cunha in early June, but the drawn-out talks for Mbeumo highlighted the financial challenges they’re facing.
With nearly £130m now tied up in those two deals, United are at a point where selling players might be necessary before any further signings can happen.
Losing Marcus Rashford has helped ease the wage bill, but moving on the rest of the players Amorim doesn’t want is proving to be less straightforward.

Despite these challenges, Fabrizio Romano suggests United remain hopeful about bringing in a player to fill one of their most pressing needs.
“Man Utd will be active on the opportunities to bring in a striker next week,” he said on his YouTube channel. “Man Utd will get a new striker because they are very convinced about that,” he said on Here We Go podcast.
Are United quietly closing in on a new striker?
It’s understood that Amorim has been privately assured a new striker is on the way, something that should come as welcome news.
The United manager has publicly backed the club’s approach throughout the window, staying away from any back-and-forth with the media.
He has already seen 35 Premier League goals added to his squad before pre-season kicked off, although the need for a striker was still glaring.
United struggled to secure some of their attacking targets, but if they’re now feeling more confident about landing a new striker, it suggests that progress is being made behind the scenes.
