While Manchester United came away empty-handed from the opening weekend, their performance still stood out as one of the most promising across the league.

The 1-0 loss to Arsenal at Old Trafford did not really reflect how well United played under Ruben Amorim, who will be frustrated not to come away with something.

The debuts of new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were among the positives.

Beyond them, one of the Red Devils’ key long-term players also stood out, but for his defensive approach.

Speaking ahead of the new campaign, Ruben Amorim said Yoro could become one of the world’s best if he continues to develop. The French centre-back showed plenty of promise last season and will be looking to build on that this year.

It is still very early in the season, but there are already signs that the 19-year-old star is picking up where he left off. He currently leads the league in interceptions after just one game, according to Premier League stats.

Yoro made four interceptions against Arsenal, putting him level with Chelsea’s Reece James, Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar and Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams at the top of the early standings.

The French defender was praised by Rio Ferdinand following his performance against Arsenal, and it looks like the teenager has already secured a place in Amorim’s starting line-up for the new season.

Leny Yoro wasted no time in becoming a Manchester United regular

United have impressive depth at the back heading into 2025/26, with Lisandro Martinez expected to return from injury soon.

Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are battling for the central spot in the back three, while Luke Shaw, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven and Tyler Fredricson add further competition on the flanks.

Even so, Yoro has locked down his place on the right side of that defence, and is quickly becoming one of the first names on Ruben Amorim’s teamsheet. His possession and line-breaking skills are vital to the Portuguese coach’s system, with room for growth.
