Kobbie Mainoo’s activity at Carrington on the first day of Manchester United’s pre-season may have slipped under the radar, but eagle-eyed fans should take notice.

Ruben Amorim’s side will kick off the 2025/26 calendar in July, following a post-season tour of Asia in May.

While most players are still on break, several first-team members began their preparations on Monday at the training ground complex in Carrington

Mainoo made 37 club appearances last season, a total that could easily have been significantly higher if not for injury. And although he wasn’t a midfielder who provided so many goals and assists last campaign, his presence and characteristics were still a big part of United’s style of play.

However, to prove himself at the highest level of European football, the young midfielder needs to improve certain aspects of his game.

Mainoo was spotted working on upper-body strength, assisted by a member of staff. The decision to focus on strength training didn’t appear to be by chance.

There’s a growing expectation that midfielders in England must possess top-tier running power and the ability to dominate on and off the ball.

Mainoo’s technical ability, speed and comfort on the ball are all there, and while his tactical game could use time, physically, the added strength won’t go amiss.

Why would improving physically be good for Mainoo?

There’s growing importance for Premier League midfielders who possess power and the ability to dominate both phases of the pitch, something Mainoo could do.

He’s still only 20, so there’s no rush to get him into peak form early on. But if he can pick up size and muscle quickly, his manager could trust him with key roles sooner than expected.

There’s already talk of Mainoo taking on expanded responsibilities next season. Ruben Amorim has deployed him in various midfield roles, including stints as a No. 10 and a false nine.

With United potentially seeking an extra midfielder in the transfer market, Mainoo’s versatility and increasing physical presence could be vital to his role under Amorim.
