Javi Guerra has Manchester United’s attention, but the Red Devils face competition
Amorim’s call for a more athletic midfielder isn’t new and has been part of the transfer story throughout the summer window.
Javi Guerra is now at the centre of that discussion, following a breakdown in his contract negotiations with Valencia. Marca have even linked him to a £21m move to Old Trafford.
Graeme Bailey, the transfer correspondent for United in Focus, has provided an update on where things stand, suggesting progress is being made.
United in Focus understands that Manchester United are actively pursuing Javi Guerra, who has become their main midfield target.
Ruben Amorim is said to be pushing for a dedicated defensive midfielder, and both Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell are exploring several options. Within this search, Guerra has moved to the top of their list.
The club’s interest in Guerra isn’t new. They’ve had eyes on him over the past two years and have maintained contact during that time.
Valencia are hoping to secure him on a long-term deal, but could be set to lose another key player after Mosquera’s move to Arsenal.
United in Focus sources have confirmed ongoing discussions through intermediaries this month regarding Guerra.
“Javi Guerra is a player United have liked for a long time,” Bailey said. “But they also know they are not the only side keeping close tabs on his situation, but they do like him.
“Guerra, too, is aware that United are interested – he does fit the bill for the midfield option United are looking for.”

If United do decide to move for Guerra, it would be more than just a short-term fix. The 22-year-old has shown enough upside to suggest he could be a key part of the squad moving forward.
Guerra also fits what United are looking for in a midfielder. ESPN scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen highlighted this when weighing up the potential signing.
“His ball-carrying isn’t particularly refined, but what he lacks in technical finesse he makes up for with power and determination. Guerra regularly breaks lines by sheer intensity and incisive movement.
“What will appeal to Premier League scouts is his combination of physical robustness and tactical awareness. At 6-foot-2, Guerra has the build and ability to cover ground to add a new dimension to the Manchester United midfield, and while his work off the ball might not be as eye-catching as his forward runs, he positions himself smartly and is quick at closing down opponents.”
Guerra would likely need time to settle in, with Amorim probably envisioning him in a deeper role similar to Xabi Alonso – breaking up play with his awareness and distributing from deep.
One thing that stands out about him is how well he presses. That is exactly the type of energy Amorim wants more of in United’s midfield next season.
