Manchester United are scanning the transfer market for ways to reinforce their midfield in 2026. A name previously tied to Old Trafford has resurfaced, thanks in part to intermediaries reigniting interest.
It’s a hectic stretch on the football calendar, with clubs juggling both buying and selling during the winter window.
While United tend to hold off until summer to make moves, last January saw Ruben Amorim bring in two signings who are now set to start against Leeds.
That alone is proof that business can be done in January. One move that won’t be happening is for Antoine Semenyo, who chose title-chasing Manchester City over a switch to Old Trafford.
The midfield has been an issue for much of the season, and there’s still room for improvement. With Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro both ageing, it may be time to start looking toward the future of United’s engine room. Fernandes still starts most matches while Casemiro isn’t even featured as much on Manchester United manager Amorim’s matchday squads anymore.
Man Utd leaning on intermediaries in Ederson pursuit

As United continue their search for midfield reinforcements, agents and clubs are starting to put forward new proposals.
“You don’t go and buy players for the sake of it. January is the hardest time to bring in good players,” Hill said. “If it’s not there, don’t just buy them. If he does need players then the club needs to back him.”
There have been reports linking Atalanta midfielder Ederson with a move to Old Trafford this winter.
TEAMtalk claims that intermediaries representing United have checked in again on the Brazilian midfielder.
The club appears committed to securing an elite midfielder before the window closes.
United’s interest in Ederson isn’t new, which could help progress talks, but they’ve also been checking his availability and asking price after his agent suggested he might be available at a reduced fee.
Their shortlist also includes Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Connor Gallagher and Ruben Neves.
The question now is which name will come in to refresh United’s midfield options for 2026?
Ederson’s Atalanta form: a closer look
Ederson has been regularly linked with a move away from Atalanta over the past year, as speculation about his future continues to build.
The 26-year-old has played consistently for a side currently 10th in Serie A and may feel now is the time to make a step up before that window closes.
He’s featured in 18 matches this season, demonstrating good availability – an important factor for any potential move.
Statistically, his return has been modest. The Brazil international has recorded just one goal and one assist so far, both of which came in Champions League action.
