Fabrizio Romano has provided some clarity on Manchester United’s approach to signing a striker in the summer window.

United are also said to be closing in on their third major signing of the summer, with Bryan Mbeumo expected to arrive in a £71m deal.

The transfer expert has added that a striker is now the next priority for United – and Ineos are already moving quickly behind the scenes.

The club have missed out on Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitike, who is close to joining Liverpool. Ruben Amorim was also interested in bringing Viktor Gyokeres back under his management, but Arsenal are currently ahead in that chase.

There have been reports from Portugal suggesting that United could step in for Gyokeres, but Romano has addressed those claims and provided some clarity.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano explained that the stories in Portugal are coming from transfer intermediaries rather than from the player or his agent.

“Intermediaries have been working on this possibility to present Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United, but it was not even possible to advance,” Romano said.

“That is as of today, with the market, we never know.

“But as of today, it is very clear that Viktor Gyokeres says Arsenal. He wants to join Arsenal and he is only convinced by Arsenal’s project.”

The idea of United making a late move for Gyokeres appears to be off the table for now, but there is one striker target Ineos are actively keeping an eye on.

Man United still tracking RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko

Ruben Amorim was already growing concerned about his squad’s lack of firepower, and it showed again as United drew 0-0 with Leeds in their opening pre-season friendly.

There’s already a clear need for a striker, and Graeme Bailey has previously told United in Focus that there is real interest in Sesko.

The 21-year-old is expected to cost around £68m, but Romano noted that any move would likely depend on United clearing out some players first.

“One of the names being mentioned internally in recent weeks is also Benjamin Sesko, a player who is well known at Manchester United,” he said.

“But in this case, before entering into concrete talks, we will have to wait and see what will happen at Man United with outgoings.

“I told you how important it would be at Man United to let some players go to help financially. Marcus Rashford is going to Barcelona but there is also Sancho, Antony and all the rest including Alejandro Garnacho.”
