The Manchester City star says the Liverpool boss tried to sign him before his Etihad switch.
Man City ace Ilkay Gundogan sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, and opened up on how Reds boss Jurgen Klopp tried to bring him to Anfield before he joined Pep Guardiola’s revolution at the Etihad.
The 27-year-old joined City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2016, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £20 million, but has struggled for both fitness and form ever since.
The Germany international was signed by Klopp for Dortmund from Nuremberg in 2011, so the Liverpool boss is obviously a very keen admirer of the cultured midfielder.
Gundogan sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, and opened up on conversations he shared with the Liverpool boss before eventually joining Manchester City in the summer fo 2016:
“I spoke with Jurgen about different things. He always liked me as a player and I would be a liar if I said he didn’t try. But when I had the opportunity to join City and work with Pep, it was quite clear that I wanted to come here.”
City travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool tomorrow, and a win for Guardiola’s side would all but wrap up the Premier League title, and in doing so, would fully vindicate Gundogan’s decision to join the Citizens rather than the Reds 18 months ago.
