Manchester City have reportedly had an offer rejected by Real Madrid to sign star midfielder Toni Kroos, with Pep Guardiola believed to be eager on bringing the Germany international to the Premier League.

According to Defensa Central, the English champions made an offer to lure Kroos to Manchester that would have seen the midfielder earn over double what he currently makes in Madrid. However, the approach was rejected, with the five-time UEFA Champions League winner settled in Spain.

As per the report, Kroos wants to renew his current deal with Madrid, with the 32-year-old’s contract set to expire next summer as interest will likely increase from across the continent for the Los Blancos superstar, who is showing no signs of slowing down.

A FIFA World Cup winner with Germany, Kroos is one of the most decorated players in the modern era, with the midfielder a key reason behind Madrid’s incredible winning record in the Champions League and La Liga title win last season under Carlo Ancelotti.

And for City, their attempt to sign Kroos was likely to always be one in vain, with the Manchester giants seemingly eager to bring in a player who would suit Guardiola’s philosophy as exit rumours continue to mount for the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan.

Indeed, signing Kroos would have been quite the move from City, especially given how the club’s recent transfer strategy has been more geared towards younger players. And in hindsight, Madrid rejecting the offer might have done Guardiola some good.

Kroos’ CV speaks for himself. The former Bayern Munich star is one of the best midfielders the game has seen this century and is a player who will soon retire as one of the most successful in the modern era. However, City’s recent moves in the market simply don’t point towards a 32-year-old coming in to play an outfield position.

Whilst Kroos could offer something in a City system the midfielder might be able to adapt too, Guardiola and the club need to be smart with who they sign to replace the likes of Silva and Gundogan. And as great as the Madrid star is, he wouldn’t be the long-term answer supporters are looking for.
