Manchester City have returned to the top of the Premier League table after battling to a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s early kickoff at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden’s first English top-flight goal early in the game proved the difference as Pep Guardiola’s charges saw off Spurs, the team that knocked them out of the Champions League just three days earlier.

The 18-year-old’s diving header – assisted by Sergio Aguero – after five minutes played ensured that the reigning champions maintained the pressure on title rivals Liverpool before their match at Cardiff City on Sunday.

It was a hard-fought match and Spurs weighed in with numerous chances, Ederson keeping Son Heung-min on several occasions, while also keeping out efforts from Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura.

Raheem Sterling had City’s best chance after the break, only for the outstretched leg of Spurs stand-in goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to thwart the England international’s efforts, but the hosts held tight at the back to pick up all three points.

Sterling, who scored a brace in the midweek European encounter, took to Twitter after the game and shared his thoughts on the Citizens’ performance and result in the rematch:
