Manchester City are reportedly in talks to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes, with Pep Guardiola a huge fan of the Portuguese international.

According to A Bola, discussions have begun for the 23-year-old Primeira Liga star, with Nunes catching the eye of many top clubs this season after a breakout season with Sporting both domestically and in Europe.

As per the report, City are hoping to complete a deal for Nunes involving Pedro Porro. The Spanish defender has been at Sporting for the past two seasons after leaving the Manchester giants on loan, and the Portuguese club could be eager to accept the proposal.

Porro has been one of the best fullbacks outside of Europe’s top-five leagues over the past two seasons, and Sporting could be open to selling their star midfielder to City in Nunes if the defender is included in a deal.

A talent Guardiola hailed last month as ‘one of the best in the world’ via Proxima Jornada, City’s recent track record of Portuguese players and Primeira Liga products flourishing at the club has been sensational.

Both Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva are key members of City’s squad, whilst Ederson Moraes’ move from Benfica to the Premier League single-handily redefined the goalkeeping role in English football. And now, Nunes could be the next player from Portugal to succeed.

Nunes could be City’s latest gem from off the beaten path

City’s record from buying in Portugal is quite impressive, to say the least, and in Nunes, Guardiola’s side could have the latest gem from the Iberian nation if they can strike a deal with Sporting in the coming weeks.

With Guardiola a huge fan of the midfielder and the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne hitting their thirties, Nunes could be a long-term option for City in the centre of the park for years to come.
