Wayne Rooney might be a Manchester United legend, but the all-time England goalscorer’s latest comments on Phil Foden at the 2022 FIFA World Cup has struck a note with fans of Manchester City.
Writing for the Times, the DC United manager made the plea to Gareth Southgate to drop England captain Harry Kane in favour of Foden in the Three Lions’ final World Cup group stage match against Wales, where the Three Lions will be hopeful of returning to winning ways.
England had to settle for a draw against the USA on Friday night, with Foden not even coming off the bench as many fans and pundits criticised Southgate’s decision to not play the City talisman, with Rooney leading the criticism this weekend.
Rooney wrote: “I found it very strange that Foden did not come on against the USA. Technically, he is the best footballer England have. He creates chances, he scores goals, he influences games and he gives you control.”

The former United and England captain leader added: “I think if you have a talent like Foden, you simply have to play him. He is more mature and came into this tournament on the back of a long period of brilliant performances for City. He has the form to go with the ability.”
Indeed, the comments rang true for many City fans on social media, with numerous supporters lauding Rooney for sticking up to Foden and for agreeing that the 22-year-old should feature for England in the upcoming World Cup clash against Wales, which could go on to defy the entire competition for Southgate’s side.
Here’s what some City fans had to say on Twitter about Rooney’s comments, with many lauding the DC manager ahead of what could be England’s most important match of the entire World Cup against Wales…
