Manchester City have reportedly agreed a deal with Chelsea over the sale of Nathan Ake, with Raheem Sterling announcing on social media that he will be signing for the west London side.

90min claim that the Premier League champions have accepted a £45m offer for the Netherlands international that will see Ake return to his former club, with the centre-back set to become City’s third major sale of the transfer window following Sterling’s move to Chelsea and Gabriel Jesus signing for Arsenal.

With Ake largely a squad player during his two years at City, a return to Chelsea makes a lot of sense for the defender at this stage of his career, with Thomas Tuchel’s side looking to sign two quality centre-backs to replace Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

According to reports, Napoli captain Kalidou Koulibaly is also close to signing for Chelsea, and with Ake set to shortly follow in the front door at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have done well in the market to fill in the holes left in at defence heading into the summer transfer window.

Indeed, Ake famously came through Chelsea’s academy after joining Cobham as a teenager from Holland, with the defender impressing out on loan for the likes of Watford and AFC Bournemouth, though despite these spells, the centre-back has never been given a real chance to play for the Premier League giants.

However, that now looks to finally change with City accepting an offer from Chelsea for the former defender, with Ake likely to take the left-centre-back spot in Thomas Tuchel’s back-three that for the past two years has been one of the best in Europe.

City have one of the biggest and best squads in all of football, and whilst selling Ake and Sterling to a rival club might be an off move, recouping close to £90m in transfer fees is a great piece of business from the Manchester giants this summer.

After all, Ake was largely a rotational player during his time with City, whilst Sterling has been replaced this summer in Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, meaning the pair can leave the Premier League champions without leaving Pep Guardiola short in any position.
