Celtic defender Kieran Tierney played for Scotland against the Netherlands at the Pittodrie Stadium on Thursday.
Tierney is a left-back by trade and is one of the best young players in that position in Europe.
The 20-year-old Celtic defender can also operate as a central defender, but Mackay has revealed that the youngster does not want to play as a right-back.
The former Celtic defender made the revelation following Scotland’s 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands on Thursday evening.
Rangers defensive midfielder Ryan Jack was deployed as a right-back at the Pittodrie Stadium, while Tierney played as a centre-back.
“Kieran Tierney going there is NOT the answer,” Mackay, who took charge of Scotland against the Netherlands, told The Scottish Sun. “He doesn’t want to be playing there, trust me.
“Callum Paterson has been out for a year. He is 10 minutes back from a torn cruciate. But maybe there is competition at right back now.”
Although Tierney has played well as a central defender, his ‘natural’ position is at left-back, and it is important that his club and national team managers play him in that role regularly.
Tierney has the potential to become the best left-back in the world in the coming years.
