Paul Tierney has done little to endear himself to Tottenham Hotspur fans after seemingly being spotted joking with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola at full-time after the League Cup final.

Tottenham felt rather hard done by over Tierney’s decisions during the game.

The referee, who had never officiated a major cup final before, failed to send off Aymeric Laporte for two clear bookable offences, and also missed a yellow card for a foul by Ruben Dias.

Gary Neville described his performance as poor, and Tottenham fans were less than impressed by his jovial demeanour at full-time.

Despite the anger among Tottenham’s fan base, Tierney could hardly be blamed for their defeat.

Laporte may have been fortunate to stay on, but Tottenham were riding their own luck throughout the game.

Spurs were penned back for much of the contest, and it was always likely that City’s pressure would tell at some point, given the attacking quality that they have.
