Speaking on a video uploaded on Liverpool’s Twitter page, Georginio Wijnaldum has given his honest opinion on Jurgen Klopp switching Liverpool to playing a 4-2-4 formation at times.
The Reds have trialled a 4-2-4 on numerous occasions this season, most notably against Manchester City earlier in the campaign, and Wijnaldum says that it’s been a big challenge to change system at times.
Indeed, the Dutch international says that it’s really difficult to play that system because of the amount of running he has to do to cover for the extra body up top.
“You know, it’s always a big challenge, especially when it goes well with a 4-3-3 with three in the midfield. Sometimes you’re forced to play with two and then you play with four attackers,” Wijnaldum said.
“It makes it really difficult sometimes because you have to run more to close the gaps. If everyone helps you to do the job good, it makes it easier than it looks.”

We certainly don’t envy Wijnaldum when he has to play in the 4-2-4.
It looks to be so energy-sapping, playing in a midfield two in a system that is so reliant on pressing and winning possession high up the pitch.
The system doesn’t seem to be a bad one. Liverpool actually put City to the sword when they played that system against Pep Guardiola’s side, but it looks to be very physically demanding on the midfielders.
