Pundit Paul Merson has been having his say on West Ham’s January transfer window… again.
West Ham have turned a corner under David Moyes but remain in the thick of a relegation battle in an increasingly congested Premier League table.
A glut of injuries to key players has come at the wrong time and Moyes was desperate to add quality to his squad during the January transfer window.
The Hammers only signed Joao Mario on a short-term loan from Inter Milan and little known Championship striker Jordan Hugill from Preston North End, much to the anger of the club’s fans.
The East Londoners sold strikers Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew to Rennes and Swansea respectively for over £20 million while allowing a host of young players to depart on loan.
“Joao Mario is decent and I think they’ll stay up this season. As for Hugill, I think it’s quite a big step from the Championship. People tell me there’s not much between the two divisions but I don’t agree. It’s a big jump to come up and score goals in the Premier League,” Merson told Sky Sports.
But just 24 hours later Merson completely contradicted himself in his column for the Daily Star.
“What is happening at West Ham? I find it extraordinary,” Merson said in the Daily Star.
“They had a terrible transfer window.”
Clearly the former Arsenal man can’t make his mind up about the Hammers.
Time will tell which of his assessments were correct not that West Ham fans will take too much notice given the fact Merson rarely ever predicts a win for their club.
