Some Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting on social media after Troy Deeney told the Evening Standard that he spoke with the north London outfit over a potential transfer.

Deeney claims Spurs contacted him to discuss moving in the summer last year, while he considered his future at Watford. Tottenham sounded out his situation after the Hornets dropped down into the Championship to offer Jose Mourinho attacking depth.

The 33-year-old scored 10 goals and laid on two assists in 27 Premier League appearances, while Spurs struggled in attack. Only Harry Kane (18 goals) and Heung-Min Son (11) penned double figures for the north Londoners during the 2019/20 campaign.

Deeney claims “there was a conversation on the phone” with Tottenham before deciding to stay at Watford than pursue transfers. Spurs, meanwhile, turned their attentions late on to loaning Carlos Vinicius from Benfica for the season.

Vinicius struggled to establish a prominent role under Mourinho, or interim head coach Ryan Mason. He only scored one goal over a mere 303-minutes of Premier League action across nine Premier League games, starting three.

Deeney helped Watford secure their immediate Premier League return after a transfer to Tottenham failed to materialise. The striker found the net seven times and also assisted three goals in 19 games before an Achilles tendon injury.

But despite Vinicius struggling to offer attacking depth, some Tottenham fans are glad they did not sign Deeney last year. That’s because they believe the experienced centre-forward would not have been a worthwhile addition.

Some also question Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy entertaining any move while wanting to challenge for silverware and Champions League football.

So, here are some of the messages Tottenham fans have shared after Deeney claimed he held talks over a possible transfer from Watford following their relegation last year…
