‘Majorly under the radar’: Paul Merson thinks Everton new boy not appreciated

Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (26/09/20 at 2:50 pm/5:15 pm) that Allan is a player who has gone ‘majorly under the radar’.

He made those comments before Everton’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace because after the game he added that the defensive-minded midfielder will be ‘one of the buys of the summer’.

It’s five wins on the bounce in all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who have looked a different animal now that the Italian has been able to lead his own orchestra on Merseyside.

They moved to the top of the Premier League table for the time being with that win at Palace and this is what Merson had to say about Allan before and after yesterday’s match.

“These are in for a good season,” Merson told Sky Sports. “The one thing I was always with Everton was that there was no legs. Bit one-paced their team. Calvert-Lewin was always doing all his work outside of the box. He’s [now] in the box.

“You got the lad Doucoure and Allan. He is a great signing. I think he’s gone majorly under the radar. I think he’s top draw. They have got legs in there. I think they are going to be decent.”

Merson then later on commented on Everton’s win at Selhurst Park and the performance of Allan:

“I would say they were comfortable,” he added. “It’s a hard place to go – it wasn’t great, but they won. That’s five wins on the trot, and I don’t care from what standard of football from under-7’s to Premier League football, you win five games on the trot, that’s a feat.

“They [Doucoure and Allan] give protection to the back four, who were quite comfortable. There was never a time in the game where you got people like Jordan Ayew, Eze, Townsend or Zaha running at the back four. When they do that, you’re in trouble. They didn’t.

“The two who sat in front were very disciplined. They don’t just go gung-ho. They know their jobs. They are experienced players and Allan is a good player. I think he is one of the buys of the window. They can mix and play.”

When Everton sold Idrissa Gueye two seasons ago, they missed his energy, ability to break up play and drive the ball into the final third.

But with the captures of the pac-man like Allan, who eats up play in an aggressive manner, showcases his physical attributes and allows the more free-flowing players in front of him to flow, it has changed Everton’s fortunes.

Whilst those at Goodison Park will keep their feet firmly on the ground. They know that these early signs are looking very promising.
