The Dutchman appeared to be beyond Rangers reach; but perhaps not.

Rangers’ hopes of making Dutch legend Frank De Boer their next manager may be more than a pipe dream, the Evening Times reports.

Since Mark Warburton’s sudden exit last week, speculation has intensified that the 46-year-old, who guided Ajax to four consecutive Eredivisie titles for the first time in their history, could be about to make a sensational move to Ibrox.

De Boer refused to rule out the possibility of starting next season with Rangers in an interview with Sky Sports earlier in the week, although the more realistic members of the club’s support have frequently offered the sage reminder that the Scottish giants are hardly blessed with unlimited funds.

Consequently, the former Inter Milan boss, who was linked with Liverpool and Tottenham in the past, would surely be forced to work with one hand tied behind his back in the transfer market while receiving much lower wages than would likely be on offer elsewhere.

However, De Boer’s agent has rejected claims that money is a motivating factor, giving the strongest indication yet that he could return to the club 13 years after arriving at Ibrox at the end of his playing career.

“If he had no interest in a job like this he would say no definitely and he hasn’t done this,” Guido Albers said in quotes reported by the Evening Times. “Everything is possible. He is going to put all options on the table in May and then he will make a decision.

“When he played for Rangers, and you can ask [former chairman] David Murray about this, he didn’t get any salary, he was playing for nothing, because he was just pleased that Rangers were going to let him play.

“He has never made a choice about money. What I am not saying is that money will not make it impossible for him to go there.”
