Naby Keita has been described as a ‘major disappointment at Liverpool.

The Guinea international cost Jurgen Klopp’s side a hefty £52 million during the summer of 2018 [Echo].

However, Keita has been anything but a roaring success at Liverpool.

But in fairness, much of his woes stem from the fact that he’s been injured and, with only six months left on his contract, could be coming into the twilight of his Anfield career.

That being said, GOAL reported in midweek that Liverpool remain admirers of the former Red Bull Leipzig midfielder and keeping him long term isn’t being ruled out, indicating a new deal may be on the horizon.

But former Reds midfielder Didi Hamann is stunned by the prospect of Keita earning a new contract, claiming he has flopped in a big way on Merseyside.

He told Stadium Astro: “I’m very surprised at people who talk about Naby Keita getting a new contract because he’s been a major disappointment since joining the club.”

Honestly, Hamann is bang on the money here.

Given that he’s only managed 23 minutes of Premier League football this season due to injury, Liverpool would be asking for trouble by extending his contract.

Yes, he is a good footballer with a lot of potential, but this isn’t a player who the Reds want to be stuck with for another five years.

And bear in mind, the next five years could be equally as injury-hit as the last five.

It’s time for Liverpool to cut their losses and either sell him next month, or release him come June.
