Maja Chwalińska has offered a straightforward reason for why she has worn different outfits during her remarkable run to the Roland-Garros final.

The Polish qualifier was asked about the subject after reaching the final in Paris, and her answer was direct.

Chwalińska said there was “no story” behind the changes because she was not sponsored, a response that fitted the unusual nature of her tournament.

When asked about her changing outfits, Chwalińska was quick to point out that there was nothing more to it than her not having a sponsor.

“I mean, there’s no story, really. I’m not sponsored, so. I guess that’s the story,” she said.

The question followed her switch from a black kit in the win over Diane Parry to a yellow top and black skirt later in the tournament.

Chwalińska’s answer came during a historic run from qualifying

Chwalińska did not arrive in Paris as one of the main names to watch.

She started the tournament ranked No. 114 and had to fight through qualifying just to make the main draw.

But her run kept building from there. She beat Anna Kalinskaya in the quarter-final and Diana Shnaider in the semi-final.

That made her the first qualifier to reach the Roland-Garros women’s singles final.

She is also just the second woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final as a qualifier, following Emma Raducanu’s run to the 2021 US Open title.

Mirra Andreeva now waits in the Roland-Garros final

The final step is the biggest one yet.

Mirra Andreeva is waiting in the final, setting up a clear contrast between a seeded contender and a qualifier who has turned heads throughout the tournament.

Andreeva reached the final after her own strong run, having been part of a semi-final field that also included Marta Kostyuk, Shnaider and Chwalińska.

Chwalińska’s outfit explanation landed because it was so plain. It also captured the wider story of a player who reached one of tennis’ biggest stages before the spotlight around her had fully caught up.
