Maja Chwalinska’s Roland Garros breakthrough ended with a final defeat, but her funniest shot of the tournament may have come in the TV studio.
The Polish qualifier reached the 2026 French Open final before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Mirra Andreeva on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
That run already made Chwalinska one of the best stories in Paris. Then she managed to leave John McEnroe briefly questioning his own place in tennis history.

Maja Chwalinska vintage tennis joke leaves John McEnroe stunned
The Tennis Letter shared the TNT Sports exchange after McEnroe asked Chwalinska whether she really knew who he was.
“Are you kidding me? When I was younger I watched a lot of tennis. Like… the vintage tennis.”
It was meant warmly, but the timing was brutal in the best way. McEnroe is one of the sport’s defining names, yet Chwalinska casually placed him in the vintage category while the studio laughed.
The line worked because it was not forced. Chwalinska had just played the biggest match of her career and still had enough timing to land a joke on one of tennis’ sharpest personalities.
Maja Chwalinska Roland Garros run changes her tennis profile
Chwalinska arrived in Paris as a qualifier and turned three weeks into a career-altering surge.
She reached her first Grand Slam final, picked up major wins and moved from outside the top 100 into a much stronger ranking position after the tournament.
The grass season is the logical next step, with Wimbledon beginning later in June. Her deep Paris run should also change how tournaments and opponents view her.
For now, she leaves Roland Garros as a finalist, a rankings riser and the player who made McEnroe hear the words vintage tennis to his face.
