Jeff Stelling has claimed that Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier has made him look like an ‘idiot’, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (19/02/22 at 12:10 pm).
The Sky presenter shared that, after Trippier’s free-kick against Everton, he said ‘don’t expect that every week’ and low and behold, he did the same against Aston Villa.
Prior to Trippier’s injury, which is set to see him out of action for several months, he scored back-to-back free-kicks for his side.
Both were crucial periods of action from the Englishman because his free-kick against Everton put Newcastle 3-1 up in a very pressurised game, whilst he scored the only goal of the game against Villa.
Nonetheless, this is what Stelling had to say, in his own unique way, of Trippier proving him ‘wrong’.
“He has proved a few people wrong,” said Stelling. “He made me look like an absolute idiot last week, didn’t he? I know it doesn’t take much.
“He scored the free-kick the week before (against Everton) and I said ‘don’t expect that every week’. He had scored ten in 343 games.
“What happens? And I know it’s a slight deflection, but my word it was a fantastic strike from him and they will be hoping he will be back soon.”

Newcastle were still able to travel down to London and record a 1-1 draw against Champions League-chasing West Ham without a number of their star players.
Added with Trippier, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin were also absent, so the point away from home would have felt even better.
Overall, they are adding up to the points towards safety and they were last beaten in the Premier League in December.
That’s some going for a side that only picked up their first win of the season after 15 matches.
