West Bromwich Albion expressed an interest with Stephane Bahoken but failed to make a serious offer for the Angers striker, sporting director Sebastien Larcier told Ouest France.
The Baggies certainly cast their net far and wide during the January transfer window.
Sam Allardyce might have been exaggerating when he claimed that enquiries had been lodged for 250 different players, but the real number was certainly a rather large one.
Josh King, Martin Braithwaite, Cyle Larin, Haris Seferovic and Kasper Junker were all linked with a move to The Hawthorns before West Brom snapped up Mbaye Diagne on loan from Galatasaray.
And, according to Larcier, Cameroon international Bahoken was another name on Allardyce’s lengthy hit-list.
But, after making an approach for the journeyman 28-year-old, the Baggies decided against turning an initial enquiry into anything more tangible.
“There were real requests for Stephane Bahoken. (West Brom) made contact but then there was no news,” said the Angers director.
The one-time St Mirren loanee has enjoyed an impressive season so far, scoring five times for an Angers side sitting ahead of crisis-hit Marseille and within touching distance of Rennes in the Europa League positions.
Larcier hopes that Bahoken could now commit his long-term future to the Ligue 1 underachievers and extend a contract which is due to expire in 2022.
