Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune has heaped praise on Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez.

Newcastle have turned a corner of late under Benitez after a dismal run where they failed to win for nine games.

Victories over relegation rivals West Ham and Stoke have sandwiched a solid performance in defeat against champions-elect Manchester City.

The Magpies are up to 13th as a result and with the January transfer window open the club’s hopes of survival have been boosted.

During the club’s torrid run Newcastle became many pundits’ tip for relegation straight back to the Championship particularly given the distraction of a protracted on-off takeover looming large in the background.

But French defender Florian Lejeune, who is starting to shine for the Geordies after overcoming an injury suffered earlier in the season, has lauded the club and his manager suggesting there is now plenty of positivity at St James’ Park.

“I wanted to discover England, but not with any club,” Lejeune told France Football.

“Newcastle is a legendary club, with one of the best coaches in the world… so my decision was an easy one.

“No lie, it feels mad (to play for Newcastle at St James’). As soon as you come onto the pitch, 52,000 people screaming and singing, it’s really impressive.

“When I signed, I saw the stadium but I did not fully realise it until the first game. The matches always sell out, and away from home, there are 2,500-3,000 travelling fans. The city lives for football.”

Lejeune told France Football he hopes Newcastle can secure Premier League safety as soon as possible and wants to continue to establish himself in Benitez’s improving side.

The 26-year-old’s words of praise will not be lost on Amanda Staveley who is currently at an impasse over the fee Mike Ashley wants for the club, as reported by The Sun.

If she does take over from Ashley and gets things right on and off the pitch Newcastle could be something of a juggernaut once it gets going.
