Graeme Murty’s Glasgow Rangers will face Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic at Ibrox in the Old Firm derby, and former Gers defender Dave MacKinnon suggests that Greg Docherty should start.
Graeme Murty’s Rangers will face Celtic at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
Docherty, who joined the Gers from Hamilton Academical in the January transfer window for a fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £700,000, could feature for the home team in the Old Firm derby.
Former Rangers defender MacKinnon, who was on the books of the Ibrox club from 1982 until 1986, has suggested why the 21-year-old midfielder would be good for the Gers against Celtic.
MacKinnon told The Daily Mail: “Greg Docherty will take his Old Firm debut in his stride.
“He will cope with the physical side of the game and the mental side, too, because he is mentally strong. He won’t be fazed by the occasion at all. He’s a very focused and composed guy.”
“Greg takes responsibility – and that’s what’s required in an Old Firm game,” added MacKinnon.
Convincing argument
Docherty has been playing well for Rangers since his switch from Hamilton in the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old is a boyhood Rangers fan, according to The Daily Mail, and that could motive the youngster even more in the Old Firm derby.
MacKinnon’s comments should convince Rangers boss Murty to include Docherty in the starting lineup for the Old Firm derby.
