Maarten Stekelenburg has hinted on Everton’s official website that he intends to stay at Goodison Park for a long time.

Stekelenburg joined Everton in the summer, and he has made an impressive start to life on Merseyside.

The 34-year-old has immediately become Everton’s number one stopper this season, and he is enjoying life at the club.

“It’s the start you want when you come to a new club but it is just the start and there’s a long way to go,” Stekelenburg said.

Stekelenburg was brought to Everton, as he is a player who Ronald Koeman knows well.

Koeman brought the Dutch international to Southampton back in 2015, and Stekelenburg admits that he owes a lot to his current manager.

“Last summer, Ronald Koeman called me before the season to tell me that Fraser Forster was injured,” he added.

“He asked if I wanted to help him out at Southampton until he was fit, so I did. Because of his injury, I knew I was going to play the first six months. I saw it as a good opportunity to play games and the situation was clear from the beginning. I got 25 matches last year and then the gaffer brought me here this summer!”

Stekelenburg has helped Everton’s defence look a lot more solid this season than it was last year.

Everton had both Tim Howard and Joel Robles in goal last term, but neither fully convinced.

The time around, the Toffees have only conceded five goals in seven matches and they currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League table.
