Sunderland’s Stewart Donald has become involved in a war of words with Lyle Taylor.
Sunderland owner Stewart Donald hit back at Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor whilst speaking to Roker Rapport – but the war of words continues.
The Black Cats took on Charlton in the League One playoff final on Sunday afternoon, and were 1-0 up early on after Naby Sarr’s own goal.
However, Charlton equalised through Ben Purrington, before Patrick Bauer smashed home a last-gasp winner for the Addicks, breaking Sunderland hearts.
Sunderland now face another League One campaign, and whilst Charlton are off celebrating, a war of words has emerged with Charlton hitman Taylor.
The 29-year-old smashed 25 goals in all competitions this season, helping fire Lee Bowyer’s side to the Championship – but he snubbed a move to Sunderland last summer.
Taylor told The Sun just days ago that Sunderland were ‘wishy washy’ with their offer and wouldn’t agree to something he asked for, which meant he chose Charlton instead.
Now, Sunderland owner Donald has hit back, claiming Sunderland’s offer was greater than Charlton’s, and suggested that Taylor’s comments may be surrounding a hotel bill.
“Well we weren’t penny-pinching, because I would be certain, was a lot more,” said Donald. “That’s a little bit insulting. If that’s how Lyle Taylor feels, genuinely, then that’s how he feels. My personal view, I’m not really interested in Lyle Taylor if I’m honest. My view of it is, his family are all from London, he got offered a lot more to be up here, and still chose not to come, and did he not come because he didn’t like the people around the manager? I’m not sure about that.”
“He’s has turned round and is saying that he’s not accepted coming to us because we’ve offered to pay him more money but won’t cover his hotel bill. Does that make sense? We’ve offered you two grand a week more than somebody else, you’ve got £100,000 extra in your wages but we won’t pay a couple of hundred pounds on your hotel.”
Taylor has hit back himself though, suggesting that he actually wanted a goal bonus, accusing Donald of lying whilst warning him that his reputation will ‘bite him in the ass’ in an explosive row.
