Newcastle United’s Alex Gilliead has impressed on loan at Luton Town.
Luton Town boss Nathan Jones has told the Bedfordshire News that he would like to sign Newcastle United youngster Alex Gilliead on a permanent deal.
Gilliead has moved to Luton on loan from Newcastle until January, and he has made a big impact at Kenilworth Road.
After a slow start, the 20-year-old has now broken in to Luton’s first-team and his last performance was highly impressive.
Gilliead shone as Luton picked up a 0-0 draw against Notts County.
And Jones has now suggested that he would like to bring the midfielder in on a permanent deal, if Newcastle are prepared to let him leave.
“It’s a little bit early but we’d love to have him in our ranks permanently,” Jones said. “That’s the type of player he is, that’s the type of player we look for.
“But no, let’s let the boy settle, let him continue his development and I’m sure Newcastle are delighted with how he’s playing and the performances he’s putting in.
“I believe he’s going to be a thoroughbred player, I believe he’s going to be a Premier League player. He’s kind of backing up my words.”
Gilliead has never played above League Two level in his career to date, but his performances while on loan for Carlisle United last season also caught the eye.
The 20-year-old is rapidly establishing himself as one of the finest players in the fourth tier, despite his tender years.
Gilliead’s good form has helped Luton move into fourth place in the League Two table, after 15 games have been played.
