David Provan has claimed in The Scottish Sun that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will not care if his players do not get a guard of honour against Celtic at Celtic Park.
Rangers won the Scottish Premiership title last weekend, ending Celtic’s hopes of clinching the championship for the 10th year in a row.
The Gers have been the best team in Scotland this season and, remarkably, are still unbeaten in the league.
Rangers will take on bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic at Celtic Park next weekend, and there has been a debate going on whether or not the Hoops should give the Gers a guard of honour.
As reported by The Scottish Sun in February 2021, Rangers chose not to give Celtic a guard of honour when the teams met at Ibrox in May 2019.
Celtic legend Provan has suggested that the Bhoys should not give Rangers a guard of honour, adding that Gerrard will not care about it.
Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “Rangers never won the league during my time at Celtic, but if they had you wouldn’t have found me in a guard of honour for them.
“And you can bet Steven Gerrard won’t give a toss if John Kennedy orders his players to blank that nonsense next Sunday.
“Gers fans claiming it’s a tradition might be right, but so was taking a lump of coal into your neighbours’ house at New Year. Clapping opposition on to the pitch puts you one down before a ball is kicked.”
Winning is what matters
Rangers will want to keep on winning in the Scottish Premiership and end the season without losing a single game.
One suspects that for Gerrard, winning at Celtic Park against bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic is what will matter, not getting a guard of honour.
