Manchester United’s Luke Shaw says he has cleared the air with new manager Jose Mourinho, after snubbing the Portuguese manger two seasons ago.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has told Sky Sports that he has cleared the air with boss Joe Mourinho, after turning down his now-manager whilst the Portuguese was still in charge of former club Chelsea in 2014.

After being heavily linked to both United and Chelsea in the summer of 2014, Shaw opted to join the north-west club ahead of their London rivals, leading Mourinho to question his motives behind the move.

Speaking to media at the time, Mourinho had questioned whether the move had been made for footballing or financial reasons, claiming that Shaw’s wage demands would have ‘destabilised the Chelsea dressing’.

Now however, with Mourinho in charge of United, and Shaw having played a crucial part in United’s early-season impressive form, the young left-back has spoken out regarding the supposed tension between the pair.

“We have spoken about it. He said it to me at first,” Shaw told Sky Sports. “I was just going to leave it, but we had a joke about it. There are no hard feelings.

“I just thought I had a better chance of playing at United. Patrice Evra was leaving, whereas Chelsea had a solid back four that I knew Jose liked.”

Shaw has started the season for United in very impressive form, after missing the vast majority of last season after suffering a double leg fracture.

After having made a full recovery however, Shaw says he is doing everything he can to improve his game, and establish himself as one of the League’s best defenders.

“I watched a lot of football while I was out and I always looked to see what other left-backs are doing and how they play, how I can improve my own game.”

“There have been a lot of good English left-backs who have emerged over the past year, especially [Tottenham’s] Danny Rose, who was the best in the league last season.”

“I want to be playing with the best and fighting got a position against the best players.”

Luke Shaw was also this week announced in Sam Allardyce’s first England squad since the former West Ham and Sunderland manager took up his position.

With Danny Rose having filled the position for his country in Shaw’s absence, the new will now likely face a direct competition as to who will keep hold of the position long-term.
