Murphy joined Leeds way back in 2013 from Crewe Alexandra.
Luke Murphy has summed up his final days at Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa as a “bad situation”, in an interview with Bolton News, after it was confirmed he had completed a move to Championship competitors Bolton Wanderers.
The 28-year-old moved to Elland Road back in 2013 for a fee of around the £1million mark from Crewe, and turned out 111 times for the Yorkshire giants during the first three years at the club.
However, the arrival of Garry Monk in the summer of 2016 saw Murphy ostracised, and he was sent on loan to Burton Albion in January 2017 – a loan which lasted 18 months and saw him play 61 times for the Brewers.
He has since signed a two-year deal with Bolton, but Murphy explains that his return to Leeds this summer – where he still had another year left to run on his contract – was not “ideal”.
“I’ve trained every day and played a couple of games for the Under-23s at Leeds,” Murphy said. “That hasn’t been ideal but you have to make the best of a bad situation. I’ll be in tomorrow and it’ll be nice to be part of something again.”
Murphy’s spell at Leeds got off to a flyer, as he found the back of the net in injury time to help the club beat Brighton 2-1 at Elland Road but now he must wave goodbye to the Yorkshire club.
The midfielder becomes the 13th player with first-team experience to leave Leeds this summer, joining Andy Lonergan, Felix Wiedwald, Madger Gomes, Ronaldo Vieira and Marcus Antonsson in leaving on permanent deals.
Paudie O’Connor, Mallik Wilks, Lewie Coyle, Pawel Cibicki, Jay-Roy Grot, Tyler Denton and Hadi Sacko have all left the club on loan – the latter confirming a loan to Las Palmas this week.
