Goals from Dwight Gayle either side of half-time gave Newcastle United victory against Leeds United this weekend, with the Whites lacking the quality that had seen them climb into the play-off places in recent weeks.
Given Newcastle’s dominance in the Championship this season, Leeds fans should not be too downbeat about the result, but it is fair to say that many of their players flattered to deceive.
However, one player who did not was full-back Luke Ayling, who recorded some fine individual stats and did his best to keep the hosts in the game.
The 25-year-old has already featured 16 times for Leeds since arriving in the summer and despite being on the losing side this was one of his best performances.

Ayling won a very impressive 10 duels on the day, while he also recovered the ball 11 times to prove his tenacity and defensive nous.
The Leeds player won three tackles, had a 71 per cent passing accuracy and was dispossessed just once all afternoon.
Ultimately he will be disappointed not to have helped his side to three points, but on this evidence Ayling will be starting week in, week out for Leeds for some time to come.
