Leeds United rescued a point against Newcastle United in dramatic fashion on Friday night, as Chris Wood’s last-gasp equaliser handed them a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park.

The Whites travelled to Tyneside having beaten Preston North End 3-0 in their previous game, and were looking for three points that would all but seal their play-off place.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the first half of their heavyweight battle, as Alfonso Pedraza rattled the cross bar with a right-footed strike, before Yoan Gouffran found the bottom of the post with a shot from the edge of the box.

Newcastle did grab the lead in the second half though, as Jamaal Lascelles met Aleksandar Mitrovic’s header, and powered a header of his own just over the line, as Robert Green couldn’t keep it out.

The Magpies were heading towards a win, but Leeds snatched an equaliser late in the day, as Kemar Roofe’s left-wing cross was touched home by Chris Wood, who sent the travelling Leeds fans into raptures.

The point doesn’t seal Leeds’ place in the play-offs just yet, with seventh-placed Fulham just three points behind, but it’s another step closer for Garry Monk’s side, with just four games left to play.

After the final whistle at St. James’ Park, Leeds players took to Twitter to celebrate, with defender Pontus Jansson urging fans to come down to watch Monday’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Luke Ayling and Alfonso Pedraza noted that Leeds keep fighting until the very end, with Marco Silvestri, Liam Cooper and Hadi Sacko also sending messages to fans after a dramatic end to Friday’s 1-1 draw.
