Everton striker Romelu Lukaku wants action.
Everton’s Romelu Lukaku in action with Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele
Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has made no secret of his ambition, and has told in an interview with The Guardian that he wants big name players to arrive at the club.
After rejecting a contract offer earlier this week, Lukaku’s behaviour can be seen two ways, agitating and troublemaking, or simply challenging the club to be better for the good of everybody, even if the timing is a little odd.
Lukaku cited last summer’s transfer activity as disappointing, bemoaning players they missed out on: “There were some players that we could have got, that I knew the club could have got, and they didn’t get.
“And they are playing in this league. I am not saying names, but they are doing well.”
The Belgian international clearly wants action this summer, and with his contract set to expire next year, the pressure is suddenly on Everton to deliver.
Fortunately for Lukaku, Everton may already be on the case.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney
Ronald Koeman made clear overtures to Wayne Rooney last month, clearly stating that he wants the Manchester United striker to return to the Toffees.
He told SkySports that he would be welcome at the club: “He has still two or three years in front of him to play on a high level. What will happen at the end of the season? I don’t know but in my opinion he is one of the players who can make Everton more stronger.”
SkySports subsequently reported that Rooney is considering a return to Everton this summer as he weighs up his future amid a lack of first team action at United.
As he was… Wayne Rooney at Everton
This is the type of deal Lukaku could get on board with. He told Belgian newspaper Le Vif back in 2015 that if there was one player he would love to play alongside it would be Rooney.
“We’ve often played against each other, and nearly played together during Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial.
“Unfortunately, I managed to injure myself and had to pull out. I still regret it to this day.”
Lukaku’s latest comments appear an attempt to turn the screw on Everton to get their transfer business done early, and make a splash.
Luckily for him, manager Ronald Koeman is already on it, with Rooney the ace up their sleeve which will quieten Lukaku down, and may be even convince him to sign a new deal.
