Luka Modric believes his old club Tottenham Hotspur can win the Premier League this season.

Modric, who was speaking to Talksport at Monday’s Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on Monday, was named in the FIFPro World XI, as Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the world’s best male player.

The Croatian playmaker left Tottenham for the Spanish giants five years ago, having helped the north London side to fourth in the Premier League.

It was Spurs’ joint-highest finish for 22 years, but has since been surpassed in each of the past two campaigns under Mauricio Pochettino.

And according to Modric, last season’s runners-up are primed to go one better in the near future.

“He’s [Pochettino] doing an amazing job at Tottenham,” he said. “Tottenham, since I left, is improving as a club in all aspects. Outside, they have a new training ground, a new stadium is coming, they are investing a lot.

“They are two years in a row close to winning the title, which in the past was not the case. I’m happy to see Tottenham improving and fighting for the Premier League title.”

When asked if they can win it, Modric, who played against Tottenham in the Champions League last week, replied: “I think so. If they continue in this way, why not? Even if the Premier League is a strong league with so many great teams and lots of great games. It’s not easy but they’re there and I wish them all the best. I would like to see them win the title.”

Tottenham’s emphatic win against Liverpool on Sunday moved them level on points with second-placed Manchester United, although the pair now trail Manchester City by five.
